About Us

We hope to inspire you to start your homesteading journey from where you are, with what you have, your own way. Just as we have started ours, we used to think we needed to wait until we bought ground and had 80 acres. Recently we realized we can begin from where we are at right now and start small. Eventually we can expand to where we want to be as the opportunity presents itself.

How We Started

My husband, Lee, and I have three wonderful kids. We both grew up surrounded by agriculture—I was raised on a farm with cattle and horses, and Lee worked in feed yards. That experience left us both feeling that we needed land and cattle to live our dream and build a life that felt like home.

Over the years, while raising our family, we tried various careers but always felt something was missing. At first, we thought it was the cattle calling us back. We realized it was just a need to get back to doing things the old way and using the knowledge we had to teach our kids life skills and do more to provide for ourselves.

Eventually, we bought a house, and I suggested to Lee that we could start right here with the space we had to reclaim that lifestyle. This led us down the path of homesteading, right within our town’s limits. That’s how Lucky Duck Acres was born! We’re located in Eskridge, Kansas, on a half-acre lot just inside city limits. Although city codes set some limitations, we’re still able to grow a garden and raise a few small animals.

In 2023, we began with a garden, and within a few months, we had added rabbits, ducks, and chickens to our little homestead. The kids love pitching in with the garden and caring for the animals. It is truly a family adventure, and we couldn’t be more excited to see where it leads us!

Purpose of the Blog

In this blog, I’ll be sharing both the hard lessons we’ve learned and the successes we’ve celebrated along the way. As we grow from our small acreage toward our bigger dreams, my goal is to inspire you to start your own homestead journey—and to help you avoid some of the bumps we’ve encountered along the way. I hope our experiences encourage you to create your own unique version of homesteading!

Classes & Other Ways to Learn

To help you on your homesteading journey we have recently started offering sourdough classes! You can find the classes here. I have a couple different options and you are welcome to message me to set up 1:1 classes. We also plan to have some videos released on YouTube with recipes and tips for canning.

Since, I am a visual learner, I find videos in the form of classes or YouTube videos helpful. So, my goal for 2025 is to create videos as I am working on projects so that you can have them to reference recipes and other things I post about in the blog.

Til next time, just get started on your homesteading journey and keep livin’ that farm fresh life!

HEY, I’M Megan…

My husband and I are the proud owners of Lucky Duck Acres. While we both have full-time jobs in town that sometimes make it challenging to get everything done, homesteading is all about making the most of what you have. That’s why we started this blog—to inspire you to begin your own homesteading journey from wherever you are, even if you live in town.

If you had told me five years ago that I’d own a small-town home on just half an acre, complete with ducks and rabbits, I would have laughed and called it impossible. Yet today, I can’t imagine life without our feathered and furry little family, or turning our tiny piece of land into something we truly love.

Along the way, our homesteading adventure has grown to include farmers markets. We bring our extra duck eggs to market, and I bake sourdough bread and sweet treats that often sell out before the day is over! It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re excited to see what God has in store for us next.

Because of interest from market visitors, I’ve also started offering virtual sourdough classes via Zoom—including both prerecorded lessons and live one-on-one sessions.

It’s another way to share our passion and help others bring a little homesteading magic into their own homes.
