Homemade Chocolate Chips (3 Simple Ingredients & Allergen Friendly)

If you’ve ever bought allergen-friendly chocolate chips, you already know—they’re not cheap.

That’s what pushed me to start testing my own. After some trial and error, this is the version that stuck. It’s simple, dependable, and made with ingredients I feel good about using.

And the real test?
My kids sneak these straight from the fridge—just like they used to with the store-bought ones.

INGREDIENTS:

  • ½ cup melted cacao butter

  • ½ cup cocoa powder

  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup

Tip: I use cacao butter chips and fill a 1-cup liquid measuring cup. Once melted, it comes out to about ½ cup.

DIRECTIONS:

1) Melt the Cacao butter

You can use the microwave or a double broiler on the stove - whatever you're used to.

2) Mix

Stir in the Cocoa powder and maple syrup until smooth

3) Pour

Pour into chocolate chip molds and scrape the extra across the top to level them out and fill any empty holes.

4) Chill

Place in the freezer or fridge until fully set.

(Freezer is faster and makes them easier to pop out.)

Yield

One batch makes about 1½ to 2 cups of chocolate chips. (I do not measure ingredients exact for this recipe which creates the variation in how much it makes)

I fill about 3½ molds per batch, so having two sets of molds makes things go smoother.

Storage

Store in a mason jar in the fridge.
These will melt if left out, especially in a warm kitchen.

A Few Honest Notes

  • These don’t behave exactly like store-bought chips—and that’s not a bad thing

  • They melt easier, which actually works in your favor for baking and drizzling

  • You control every ingredient, which matters when you’re dealing with allergies

Ways We Use These Chocolate Chips

These don’t sit in the jar long around here. We use them in all kinds of everyday staples:

From My Kitchen to Yours

HEY, I’M Megan…

My husband and I are the proud owners of Lucky Duck Acres. While we both have full-time jobs in town that sometimes make it challenging to get everything done, homesteading is all about making the most of what you have. That’s why we started this blog—to inspire you to begin your own homesteading journey from wherever you are, even if you live in town.

If you had told me five years ago that I’d own a small-town home on just half an acre, complete with ducks and rabbits, I would have laughed and called it impossible. Yet today, I can’t imagine life without our feathered and furry little family, or turning our tiny piece of land into something we truly love.

Along the way, our homesteading adventure has grown to include farmers markets. We bring our extra duck eggs to market, and I bake sourdough bread and sweet treats that often sell out before the day is over! It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re excited to see what God has in store for us next.

Because of interest from market visitors, I’ve also started offering virtual sourdough classes via Zoom—including both prerecorded lessons and live one-on-one sessions.

It’s another way to share our passion and help others bring a little homesteading magic into their own homes.
